#MyLifeIsAStory … :) Part 3

Hello Lovelies 🙂

Guess who is back? Yeah…I guess the title says it all, #MyLifeIsAStory is back… 🙂 Today we will learn about an amazing person that I had the pleasure to meet some time ago and luckily we are still in contact. She is funny, but you know the hilarious type that will put you on the floor holding your tummy? Yes, this is Alexandrya. Besides funny, she is mysterious and she is very, very kind. Lets get this started. 🙂

1. Alexandrya, do you know anything about the day you were born?

I know my mom told me I was born with a dislocated shoulder and that it was a really long labor, also that I had to have an operation on my thumb but don’t recall why that was anymore….

2. Why were you given the first name (and middle name) that you have?

My mom saw Xandria in a book and thought it would be cool to change it to a y instead so Xandrya. She always called me that even if legally she and her sister decided on Alexandrya because it seemed more ‘normal’ or acceptable. I actually prefer just Alex.

PS: Names from books are the most amazing names ever and I really like Xandrya. 🙂

3. Did you have any heroes or roles models as a child?

As a young child, none that I can think of at the moment…In my teens (15-16) it was rock bands: I wanted to know everything about the members. I think I used my teachers in high school as role models more than anything else.

4. What was your biggest fear as a child?

Being left alone at home (between 6-8 years old) and any time the doorbell rang or someone was at the door; I was not used to being around people so anything that would require interaction with a stranger or someone would spook me. I guess I still retain a little bit of that today (I still don’t like it when someone knocks at the door).

PS: I get scared when there is someone at the door as well. Actually I don’t even open if I don’t expect anyone :).

5. What was your biggest goal when you graduated from high school?

I wanted to be famous somehow, a famous cartoonist or writer, and make millions. I didn’t believe in college or university and figured I’d work full time and somehow make it big. Since the age of 12 I wanted to be millionaire and famous; that has changed into something more realistic as I get older – I just want to be financially stable and have a family now. I finally settled on getting a degree in career that is respected (Civil Engineering) financially stable and that I can enjoy.

6. How did you decide what you wanted to do with your life?

When I left call center jobs after about 5 years of doing it one of my friends got me into a construction company that deals with facilities maintenance. Something just clicked: I realized that no matter who you are, a dentist, surgeon, banker etc you need an office to work in, you need facilities. You need an HVAC system to regular the air in the space, you need lights; you walk by retailers everyday and you don’t think about the process they went through to build that store. Glaziers were involved, door companies, locksmiths, tile setters, millworkers, electricians etc . You need all of these different tradesmen and their skills to build what you see every day. This resonated with me, mainly because it serves society to the largest or smallest scale, depending on how involved you want to be. I feel that my purpose is to serve, and the biggest service to society is construction as a whole. I chose Civil engineering as my degree because it will allow me to work on higher stake projects such as building a new bridge or on a small scale such as estimating or project manager, which I enjoy because I have good instincts and use my customer service experience at my current job to negotiate with tradesmen on a job.

PS: Wow, just wow. When people know what they want in life everything is so much easier.

7. Did you manage to achieve at least half of your dreams and/or goals until this day?

I would say I am definitely in the process at the moment, kinda like knitting a scarf right now, it’s a mess of wool but it’s coming along. I have the right people in my life right now and I’m doing what’s right for me at the moment: I quit smoking weed and cigarettes. I try to go to the gym regularly; I’m learning how to drive, working full time to support myself and doing 1 night class at a time to be able to enter the engineering program. It gets boring at times and there are plenty of moments where I wish I wasn’t so busy and could sleep all day, but in the long term it’s all worth it.

PS: Yes, it is all worth it. Keep it up as I am sure you will not regret it! 🙂

8. What’s your typical day like right now?

Busy, don’t even see time go by. Honestly my favourite part of every day at the moment is my bed at the end of the day and talking to my boyfriend (long distance relationship so of course the weekends we finally see each other is what I look forward too!) But on a regular basis, my bed lol 🙂

9. Are you happy with your present life and what would you be willing to do to make it better (if you think it’s necessary)?

Despite the moments where I just want to stop yes I am happy. I’ve come a long way considering my childhood, lack of support, lack of family etc. I could have ended up in trouble, on the streets, on drugs, in a shitty relationship but I didn’t. The older I get I’m starting to realize how damn impressive that is.

PS: You are impressive, don’t stop and keep fighting!

10. What do you see as your place or purpose in life?

I mentioned it briefly in #6; it is to serve. It took a very long time to build my self esteem but the years of disregard for myself is sort of a blessing: It’s made me selfless and empathetic, I always find a way to lift up others before myself because I know I can take care of myself later – ‘Don’t worry about me right now, how can I help you?’ I’ve also learned when to stop and recharge myself, so I know I’m on the right path!

This is Alexandrya’s story. I am moved by her simplicity, by her motivation, by her strength. I will remember this when I feel that I am going down. We should all follow your example Alex, and try and help others first as I do find that we forget that we are not the center of the Universe and maybe other people around us need a bit of help as well. Thank you for your inspiring words!

Thanks for reading! Have a great night! xoxo Cristina
